1985.5 Ignition Lock Replacement

Pulled the key out the other day and the lock didn't engage as normal.  Tried turning the wheel to engage but nothing.  Key will not go back in ignition.  Got a new lock cylinder and started disassembling this weekend but figured out that this may be bigger than thought.  How do you remove the ignition lock on this model?  It's not what's in Haynes or Clarks Garage.

Thanks for the reply but it looks like it's the same solution as I've seen before for early 944's whereas I have a later model.  I don't doubt that the housing has to be drilled to unlock the lock cylinder but getting the housing out is the problem.  Is removal of the entire steering column the answer?

I think I am reading your post correctly...to remove the switch housing from the steering column..two "sheer bolts" hold it on to the column.  Have to drill out and reinstall with new sheer bolts.

use old cv axle bolts, they're the same threading and have a good length to them.

In order to remove the two bolts use a Dremel Tool with a cut off wheel to cut a notch across the bolt end and turn out with a stubby screw driver. Do it on one end or the other, whichever is easiest for you. Check out the link below as it will show you where to drill to remove lock cylinder.

After looking at your pics and dreading the idea of cutting a notch across the bolt ends to remove the lock housing I came up with another solution.  Years ago I had found a 90 degree drill adapter for 1/4 inch hex bits.  Using the adapter and a shortened bit I was able to drill the hole necessary to remove the lock cylinder.  After removing the cylinder, cleaning and working it for a while I was able to reinstall it rather than replace it.
