Embarassed i have done a lot of research, bought my car recently, (1984 944 N/A) and it broke down 3 days later, brand new battery and clean connections, yet, i turn the key over and i hear a single click in the engine and then a faint buzzing noise from the back bottom of the car(suspected buzzing to be the fuel pump but im not sure) and i have pulled my DME relay and resoldered the connections, please help!! lol  thank you

Hi!
As a new owner, you MUST read these links:
Clark's Garage has an outstanding no-start troubleshooting guide.
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/repair-procedure-index3.htm

Pretty much all the basics you need to know about your car:
http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/forum/forum.cgi?board=944Talk;action=di splay;num=1298752427

This sounds like a potential problem with your starter motor.  If your engine is not turning at all, this might be at fault.

I would suspect a fuel pressure problem IF the car was rotating but not starting.  But it's not rotating from your description.  So I would inspect the starter motor; its mechanical operation AND its electrical connections.

How exactly did the car "break down"?
Cheers,
Jacob

single click sounds more like your starter or starter solenoid. Am I correct in interpreting your post as the car isn't cranking?

I would also check the battery connections. I understand it's new, but check your cables. You can also put the car up, undo the battery cables and then go under the car and remove, clean and replace the cables to your starter and alternator (the primary from the alternator goes directly to the starter)...

If you do these steps and the car does the same thing, the next place I would look is at the ignition switch. A bad ignition switch won't make contact on certain terminals and it may not be sending a start signal to the DME, and it may not be sending voltage through the alternator and to the starter.

A single click sounds like a starter issue or possibly an ignition switch, but not a DME problem.

one more thing - don't resolder the connections on your DME relay, buy a new one they are cheap and critical.

Thank you very much both of you!! i am off to work now but i will read those links soon! Smiley and the car is not cranking however i have taken the starter and solenoid into O'reilleys(spelling) and they tested it and said there was no problem with either component, and whit the cleaning cables, i cleaned the starters cables as well as the battery's when i had the starter taken off.
Thank you sooo much for your help guys!!!!! Cheesy

sorry so many posts, but the last thing, it was almost out of gas, so i dumped a gallon in, and drove my friend up the road to show him the car, i drove it pretty hard, then(my shift knob is very loose for 3rd and 4th, is this normal?) and i started my car in 3rd gear from a stop, that didn't sound too healthy, and 2 miles from my house i shut it down at my friends house, and 30 seconds later when i was about to head home, my car clicked and buzzed, haha. so that's my story, hopefully the new information proved helpfulCheesy thank you!!

I understand jump starting is unhealthy, yet i wanted it to run so i tried that when it first broke down, that was my first diagnosis, that didn't work, i then pushed it and popped the clutch to get it home and it felt bogged down, now it wont even push start. Sad

Clean your grounds - standard advise to newcomers as 25 years of corrosion is tough to conduct electricity through. Yes, agree that it sounds like a connection problem to your starter, one of our esteamed members, Ramius968, sells a complete primary wire set and is recomended if the wire is in bad shape. Some engine bay pics would be nice for us to see what kind of shape the car is in generally. If you have squeeze wire type battery post connectors - Bingo!

Not sure if that is similair to the 1980 924 I have but it did the same thing. It turned out to be a bad ground wire from the alternator and from the battery to the chassis.

and sstrickstein, i will look into that, thank you as well.

i just got back to my house, and remembered that the car wont even push start any more, it did twice since it and now it wont, i can hear that exhaust(custom) light up for a second then i hit the clutch and gas simultaneously and it dies quicker >:

oh ye! and another update i forgot to just post! I can turn the key to [on] and the throttle clicks, then when i turn to [start] the solenoid engages(yet the starter refuses to spin, and i have dis assembled it and it is not locked up, i could turn it with my fingers) then when i release the key to [on] the starter clicks again(i think the solenoid un-engaging) and then when i turn the key to [off] my throttle clicks again, and now there is no buzzing from the suspected fuel pump. i think i broke my DME relay so i will replace that soon, until then, ill hot wire it to test your guys' advice thanks;D

First thing I would do is dump the k&n open air filter. They dont ad any Horsepower and let lots of dirt in your engine. If you dont have one or cant afford one and if a 944/2 box will work I will donate the extra one I have.
