Tachometer Not Working

Just got back my car from the mechanic after a couple of weeks and it runs.  It still has some issues such as a bit of hesitation and stuttering when you give it some welly but I drove it 800 miles the other day and it was a blast.  I will deal with the stuttering later on once I figure out what RPM levels it does it at, but I can't do that until I get my tach to work.

All the gauges with the exception of the  odometer and tach seem to work.  Because the trip odometer is set at zero I assume it doesn't work because the previous owner tried to reset it while the car was moving.  This problem should be easy enough to tackle.

Anyone have any clues on how to get the tachometer up and running or is it going to require replacing the whole cluster?  Also  I remember reading that there is a company that sells LED kits for the cluster but I can't recall what it is called.  The cluster lights are way too dim and you can barely see them at night so i figure when I go in there to fix the tach and odometer I can install those as well.

As always, thank you all for you help.

You can try to remove / clean the contacts on / and reinstall the gauge cluster.. you can also try cleaning the 24 pin connector on the firewall just above the brake booster.

Otherwise you might need a new tachometer.. odometer is likely a broken gear, easy fix!

You can reset the trip when the car is moving.  It is a big myth that you can.  If the gear is bad it's bad and resetting the trip wont effect it.  Pull your cluster out (you CAN do it without taking the steering wheel out).  Follow (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and you will be ok.

the guys that bring you this great forum
also sell parts  - thats how they are able to keep it up and running -
they do have the LED lights for the dash -
either just three main bulbs or as in kits with reflector fixes as well

its easy to do - and as you will have the cluster out then replace the odo gear at the same time -

mph ?
or kmh ?

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

and yes the gear comes with instructions

also
as your car hesitates when you stick the welly in
you should look at this as the fix
very very very common problem
did I say its a common problem ?
happens all the time ?
happened on my own car ?
how did I fix it  ?

click on this link for the fix

tach not working ?
check the connection at the baclk of the cluster when you have it out to replace the odo gear and the bulbs
if thats not it
maybe one of the ref sensors
either bad
or the connectors are bad

Sorry Ian, I completely forgot about that even though I called your office last week looking for something.

Sadly the car had an unfortunate run in with a tree a couple of days after I got it back from the mechanic (I drove it for all of two days) and has been totaled.  I am saddened but I am picking up another one next week so I will be coming to you to buy some parts.  I am thinking of starting with the under hood padding.

Ian,

so if one sensor is bad, it'll give the tach a bad time? I replaced the reference, but not the speed (speedometer works just fine).

Speedometer isn't driver by the speed sensor next to the ref sensor.  Completely seperate system & purpose.

That's what I figured. Had to ask the dumb question though. I still can't figure out why it's giving me grief. All the contacts in there are clean. (grounds haven't been done yet in there/didn't know they where in there). Still, nothing else is effected. Just looked up new tachs (and properly had a heart attack). lol!

There is a gear/sensor at the transmission, converts things to an electrical signal which drives the speedometer/odometer/trip.

Ian might have a used tach, otherwise there is always evilbay.

hmmm...

maybe it's slightly dirty? Corroded?

It used to work fine, then over the last few months not as much tach bounce. So I changed the ref sensor thinking it would fix it. Nope. It does work though once you get going.
