As mine is also an early style, no easy task ahead.

Anyone that has peeled the vinyl off of a dash will have experienced the varied results.
The top side where the sun hits it will require applying heat to soften the brittle parts.
These sections will come off with more than just the vinyl.
The lower portion of the dash will peel rather easily with "clean" vinyl.

I am thinking the difference is the glue peeling off or not.
Any of the shiny areas left on the padding would be the glue.

Reading somewhere that old glue will contaminate the new glue being applied, I'm planning on removing/sanding all of it off.
