Advice on purchase of 1992 968

Hello,

I'm sorry if hearing from me is getting laborious, but hopefully I'll soon be an owner and then we can talk about upgrades and maintenance. Smiley  The 944/1 I first posted about disappeared in suspicious circumstances after I declined buying it, but now I am in the fortunate dilemma of choosing between a very cherry looking 924S and a low mileage (100k KM) 968.

http://www.blocket.se/stockholm/Unik_lagmilad_Porsche_968_utan_targatak_55404115...

The 968 is in fairly good shape. Couldn't see any rust, engine fairly clean, interior was in decent condition.  Only problems I could see were a number of cosmetic things like door frame moulding chipped, nicks here and there on the outside, and a few holes in the plastic grill under the bumper, but no radiator damage I could see.  Clutch felt pretty solid too.

One thing that may be normal but seemed odd to me was when driving, if I kept my hand on the gear shift, I could feel it tug a little every so often, even though I wasn't shifting or touching the clutch.  It was like a little pull towards center and then went back to the shifted position, not more than half a cm deviation.  Is this indicative of a problem?

Also, it seems that the connections for some of the plastic moulding around the chassis in front of the rear wheel felt like it was starting to come off.  Is it normal for the plastic and trim to start coming undone after 20 years?

The 924S probably needs the clutch done in the next couple years, but the body was pretty stellar so I imagine I'd be doing more light body work on the 968.  In this case I think it may just be a matter of what I want, but the "pushed back into your seat" feeling on the 968 was a pleasant surprise (first ride in one for me).

Thanks for the input guys!

HOS - can't comment on the shifter thing, but yes, after 20 years the rubber panel trim shrinks. Completely normal.

you say nothing about the price for each but if either has records it would have the leg up. For me I would choose the 968 nicer newer and more power better gas milage

The 968 rocker trim forward of the rear wheel is held on with plastic fasteners somewhat like the door trim. The rubber molding around the same piece does shrink over time. Both are still sold by Porsche. Check the firewall in back of the clutch peddle as it will crack over time under and around the brake booster. I would buy the 968 if I were you over a 924S.

Cheers,

I've an 84-944 and an 92-968.  The 968 is a bit rare with the M030 suspension and a bit of tuning but light years faster that the 944NA.  Hands down I'd grab the 968.

As was said before that is just a model/feature preference.  But if all things are equal except the 924S has paper back to the original owner and a the 968 has nothing, you'd be wise go with the records you know...
