Me and a few of my friends are thinking about building a drag car out of my 1985.5 944 Porsche but not sure what's best for it. I know I need a new engine and change the transaxle. Please help me out.

This is more of a 944 purist site. You might have an easier time finding help on another site.

Google search "944 V8 conversions". Small block Chevy is the usual engine transplant.

If you are just wanting to class race for the fun of it, get an LSD from a Turbo and have a set of lower gears installed. If you are serious about drag racing it, then gut it, install a solid beam axle, a Hemi engine and build a gasser - just kidding guys!!!  Shocked

944 in it's original state was a momentum car... essentially the OPPOSITE of a drag car.

It's your car so you CAN do what you want. But just because you can doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Realistically unless you use a turbo transmission (which will likely still not deal greatly with the abuse of the launches necessary in drag racing) you're working on limited time and your differential will end up shattering into a million pieces sooner or later.

The transmissions are intended to be corner carvers, not drag race solid axle cars.  Very different applications designed for very different power distribution.

Unless you end up ripping out the torsion bar and transaxle and putting something solid axle in (which would require a way to mate it to the torque tube... and that's a sh*t ton of fab work) then all I can say is "good luck son."

The guys who have done LS1 swaps end up using turbo transmissions, but most of those guys don't even launch the hell out of them because they know how the transaxles are.

I have seen a Porsche 944 with a blown big block, as a drag car.
Looks like garbage.  Goes pretty fast.  I will stop there.

Just don't.. you will be spending a boatload of $$..
(Spent 6 years on a drag race team- SFWD 92 Civic D16z6 making 700+hp and laid down 9.86 @ 145mph)

Not the best chassis for this unless you want to hack it all up.

Most on this forum try to enjoy the car for what it is..

V8 conversions look pretty cool, I've seen a lot of examples of people doing them with LS1 engines. Good luck!

I drag raced with a guy who had a tube chassis 944 turbo body with a decent big bock Chevy and a nine inch Ford rear.  The car was sharp and without making tons of power would run 8.20 @ over 150 mph  I've considered building  street version of that car I still have a tubing bender and can do the whole car myself

To build a proper drag car, the only component of a 944 that you'll use is the body... so that you can create molds to make the fiberglass shell.  Sidenote... this thread is beyond stupid.
