Aging Auto Tensioner Accuracy?

In setting the correct t-belt tension on my ‘87na (using Bruce Arnn’s lates tool) - I found that I needed to add a significant amount of force beyond what the spring tension alone would have applied.

It does make sense that after 32 years the spring would have become somewhat weaker than when new…but it also seems that the “correct” tension as per the Arnnworxx tool is just a tad tight.

Would like to hear other’s comments…thanks!

Using an arrnworx tensioner, mine needed more tension. I had to force it further than I was happy with.

Just make sure you check t nation after 1000 miles.

When you check your belt tension are you doing it with the guide plate on the water pump removed ? With the tensioners being so old it is not uncommon for them to need to be re-adjusted.

It wouldn't hurt to clean and lube the tension pivot point to make sure it doesn't have any resistance issues.

Timing belts are always looser than they seem like they should be.
Over tightening them is the worst thing you can do.
Better to be slightly loose than slightly tight...
