door locks issue

Hello:

I have an '89 944 s2.  Door locks are smooth as butter when using key in exterior door handle, but the interior switch will not lock them.  Oddly, if i manually push the locks down, and then hit the interior lock switch, they will unlock.  When I do try to lock the door with the interior switch, I can hear some effort being made in the door, but no result.

Questions:  I assume that using the key on the exterior doorhandle also triggers the electronic locking mechanism, because it sounds and feels that way.  If that is the case, that means the connection from the mechanism to the locking knob is good.  If the switch will unlock, but not lock the door, what gives?

Undecided

The switches need replaced. Some clean them and they work but I didn't have much luck. I replaced one about nine years ago all has been fine since.
