I have found with bare polished aluminum wheels, the best way to keep the shine is to fog them with WD40 after washing and drying them.
It leaves a protective film that will protect the finish.
When you wash your car, it will wash off and you can re-apply.

I guess that I'm swimming a bit upstream against the current, but I really like the look of the stock cookie cutter wheels.  That's one of the looks of the '84 that led me by mine in the fall of '83.

Dave W, I like your "redneck" way of polishing the outer rim.

Greg

I also love the original look to the cookies AND the Fuchs forged alloys. As I am not a real enthusiast of chrome on European cars, I tend to shy away from the bright look obtained from high polishing the wheels, especially on the FUCHS. Originally they came with satin black or color matched / shiny painted centers. The ATS cookies came on 911s as a satin silver all over, and black centers on the 944.
Don't get me wrong about chrome; I love it on American cars and on Harleys. Just not on German cars which were always an 'understated' and elegant touch with their muted appearances. High gloss paints and less than showy wheels.

To me there is nothing prettier than an original FUCHS rim with it's marbled, liquid mercury look accenting the satin black or high gloss center painted white, platinum, or silver and cleaned up with no staining or brake dust.

To each their own .......
