Water pump question

Had the milk shake so I took it down to block after realizing it was a head gasket. I am just about to put the radiator back in and decided to change the thermostat before filling it up and turning it over.
When I took the thermostat off I got two pieces of black plastic fell out. It appears the plastic piece on top of thermostat (gasket) is broke. Why would that break?
Can I replace just that piece or do I replace the whole water pump?
Thanks in advance all!

A tree falling on a car is an accident. Everything else is driver error.
