Smoke

As i've posted before, I have a 1988 (not 89) 944 turbo with a stage 3 vitesse turbo kit. It has not been driven on a road in more than 10 years, and has some problems. The biggest issue, is smoke from the exhaust. I have a feeling the turbo is bad. This is because when the intake/turbo system has an air leak, the smoke runs a normal color. But when the system is totally closed, there is dark grey smoke. Could this be the turbo, or could this be an issue with the motor handling boost? Thanks for any and all suggestions, Owen.

Dark grey smoke would usually indicate that the car is running to rich. A bad turbo would be a blueish smoke from the oil. You can also tell from the smell. Easy way to check the turbo is to pull the 2 boots off of it and look for oil it will be obvious if it is bad. Both areas should be dry if they are wet then you have a bad turbo. The fact that the smoke returns to normal when you introduce more air sounds to me like you are getting to much fuel.

Thank you so much. The more that I think about it, the more sense this makes. Would you happen to know of any good tuning places in the pacific northwest? If not, you're good.

I am not sure of a good tuning place. Maybe try contacting Vitesse they may be able to help you get it straightened out.

I was also thinking it could be a clogged air filter, do you think that could be one of the issues since it's not getting enough air?

I doubt it would cause this big of a issue but you can always remove it and run the car without it to see.
