POWER SUNROOF OPERATION/MALFUNCTION

Well, seems i have another Gremlin.  Hoping someone from the Forum can help.  I have a 1984 NA 944 with power sunroof.  1st 5 years of operation were flawless.  Lately, the sunroof decided to open completely by itself while i'm driving and not able to close it unless i turn the engine off.  This time, with the roof closed and locked, I took apart the power switch, started the car, put it in gear and the roof opens up again, with the switch disconnected. Sunroof will open by itself once the car is in gear, if not in gear it will not open. With the engine running the power switch does not function.  With the engine off, it works.  Plus the up / down features are somehow crossed.  The down feature opens and closes the roof.   Sad Sad Help!

Good Morning,
There's a circuit on these cars that detects movement of around 5 mph or so and will automatically extend the sunroof arms if they're fully retracted. This is to prevent the roof flying off at speed. You may be right in that something is wired backwards causing a reverse operation.
Question: Have you played around with the front sunroof limit switch at all or, for that matter, the two rear limit switches (wiring) located at the end of the rail? I remember having a similar issue years ago and I think I had re-connected one of the rear limit switches incorrectly.

Start by cleaning ALL of your grounds.  Strange electrical issues are caused by current trying to find a ground even if it goes back through other circuits.

Dave - black 84 no longer exists. Sad 83 self destructed. All better now. Smiley
... Let's go hit some twisty roads! ...

Pat / Dave - thank you for your help.  944 has more sensors than i thought.  Where are these front and back limit switches?  Roof opens automatically whether the Pins are retracted or locked in place. I'll check the rails.

After thinking about this for a bit, I took a look at the factory manual which mentions the operation via the roof-mounted micro-switch. Did you futz with this at all? You may want to also peak here:

Patrick, you are a Genius! Problem resolved, sunroof functions nicely.  Followed your advice and all is good.  Cleaned both rear limit switches.  Culprit was center mount roof micro-switch. Thank you Sir. Smiley
