Hi all...I have just joined as I am after a bit of information...I am removing the front seats from my 944, and I am hoping someone can tell me what the tool is called that is required to undo the bolts on the runners.....I call it a 'star shape tool' but I think it has a proper name....can anyone help?

probably torx.....there is torx plus and other deviations but those came later.

do be aware that the captive nuts in the chassis are quite fragile. use a little penetrant a few times before attempting to remove them. you might give them a light tap or two with a hammer or tighten them a little before loosening.

Tell us how it turned out. And come back often for all we discuss here. There is much to learn about 944s.

post a picture of what you have. you might need a few more posts to do so.

my car is a M6 Allen on where the tracks mount to the floor but previous owners might have replaced them with a convenient item. the adjective "star" implies torx to me.

there cars also use XZN type heads also known as triple square or cheese-heads.

Hi all....the torx keys arrived this morning, so I set about getting the seats out....the passenger side seat came out no problem....the rear bolts on the front seat were also easy....the problem is the 2 bolts at the front....I have doused them in WD40 and will leave them for an hour or so and then try again...

I have doused the bolts in WD40 but the torx key is just spinning inside the bolt....the car is actually rotten and I am breaking it....the outer skin below has come away enough to show the bolt but there is nothing to hold onto....any ideas?

There exist: Easy out bits, and a hand tool or use a battery operated drill on reverse trigger, slow and ease it out.

Scubby Doo Rut--Row! Here is the Gotcha! below

You will need a little bit of luck. Possibly the best thing to do is take one of the bolts that was removed with you to O'Riley or Auto-Zone and inquire what size you would need if the one attempt to remove is ...stripped in the thread.
Then also get an idea once you remove it what tap size you will need to re-structure the female thread in the rail and floor plate unless the plate is rusted out,, then you will need to cut that part out grind it and weld a patch piece of steel in then position the rail and drill & tap as necessary.

Otherwise just take your acetylene torch and start cutting but fire proof the wiring and the combustibles first.

Now let us suppose you are not that lucky. Eliminate the fuel lines or any fuel source and clean all the crud from the under-body (chassis) and hope you got it all before applying any heat source, other than chemical. Before beginning get your monitor or make certain you are not in a hazardous area and you have at minimum 6 air changes per hour with mechanical ventilation before undertaking and cutting or welding.

I have welded new plates in to repair rotted out bolt holes.

Both of my 944's used Allen head bolts to hold the seats in.

Somebody suggested putting a screwdriver against the bolt through the runner and turning the bolt...I will try again tomorrow...If it doesn't work, then I will have to resort to drastic measures as mentioned...Thanks guys Smiley

This 944 neighborhood is really nice. The idea of Auto-Zone might not be good for replacement of new bolts.

I used a local vendor, Fastnal Industrial Supplies for bolts I could get some torque on top of.

One idea is get some hardened SS bolts for replacement and by all means get them back to the Std-Allen wrench. I do not see anyone trying to steal your leather buckets.
