Hidden Audio Install

Hey All,
I wanted to share my experience with this installation as it is not only easy to perform, but also has the feature of being totally hidden from view. Based on exhaustive research (really...?), it appears that my 84 , a very low optioned car, came pre-wired with four speakers and an antenna, but without a factory radio installed. A plastic cubby was originally inserted in place of the radio within the center console.

The goal has been to find a small audio system, capable of accepting an USB thumb drive (audio source) with possible Bluetooth tech. What I found was very interesting: A deck of card sized amplifier with two speaker outputs and USB/micro SD & Bluetooth inputs.

Unit is smaller than my Android phone:

Let's bench test the unit prior to installation:

All wired up and tested in the car. While it's only two channels, the sound is better than expected.

The picture isn't too great but I simply secured the unit to the cruise control module bracket inside the center console. Again, my car didn't come with CC so the bracket came in handy.

In order to keep everything hidden, I drilled out the existing light hole in my spare ashtray (still have the nice original unit) in order to route the remote cable through and into the amp.

Nice stuff - That only took about a week since we talked on the phone.
Why didn't you go for the 4 channel unit they sell?

Added bonus of tunes AND the cubby.

No stopping you!!

Hey Bill,
Unfortunately, they don't carry the 4 channel anymore. Besides, the unit is really short money ($68.00 shipped).

I think a good related question - What Speakers are being used?

- the difficult to find due to the limited depth  - front?

- the tough to get to - rear?

My recent searches have returned many discontinued suggestions.

I reached out to Steve (our host) regarding the speaker situation; they do carry the genuine Porsche product although they're @ $80.00/pair. So in the meantime, I've re-installed an old aftermarket pair in the doors until I buy speakers that actually fit behind the stock grills.

You might find some relevance in this link for normal depth speakers not Porsche as asked above, but I was wondering if the blue-tooth proprietary 3.3V operating voltage. would effect speaker selection and the existing wire harness.

Without a head end unit (amplifier specification), it might be advantage to get that info' from the original post.

Otherwise here is some general guidance.
https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/239679/matching-speaker-specific...

The exact match looks like an extraordinary find. Candidly recognizing the hidden aspect is a big priority from the introduction post.

More accomplished this weekend: The hidden audio system does have a FM receiver however; the antenna connections are simply two wire leads and the original antenna cable was missing it's coax connector. So I installed a RG-58 BNC connector (Soldered center gold pin and crimp-style ferrule on the cable, then made a female BNC to twin lead adaptor which I soldered on to the audio antenna leads. Establishing this type of connection will allow for quick and easy unit removal if needed.

Here's when things got interesting. This new unit does not possess a switched 12VDC output when turned on, in order to activate a powered antenna, and splicing the original switched power lead will make the antenna rise whenever the ignition key is inserted. So... I ran a hot and ground lead from the center console switch row to both the Red/Yellow wire (always hot) and the White wire (Power Antenna Motor). I then connected a spare (side power mirror) switch that will allow me to manually activate the power antenna whenever needed. Now the antenna will only rise when I wish to listen to FM stations and not stay "activated" while playing my mp3 music files. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures of the antenna wiring... but here's what the antenna switch looks like:
